NEW YORK - The University of Michigan's preliminary October consumer sentiment index reading was 67.9, compared to the final September 68.2, the preliminary September 66.6, and the final August 68.9, according to market sources.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 69.0 reading for the index.
The expectations index was 64.6, compared to 60.9 in September, 59.1 earlier in September, and 62.9 in August.
The current conditions index was 73.0, compared to 79.6 in September, 78.4 earlier in September, and 78.3 in August.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 79.8 reading for the current conditions index and 61.5 for the expectations index.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.7%, compared to 2.7% in September, and 2.8% in August, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.2% in September, and 2.7% in August.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
