ADP: Private-Sector Jobs Off 39,000 in September

Private-sector employment fell by 39,000 in September from August on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the ADP National Employment Report released Wednesday.

The estimate for the change in August employment was revised upward to a gain of 10,000 from the previously reported decline of 10,000.

The employment gauge measures private employment and does not include federal hiring. It is viewed as an early indicator of the monthly employment situation report, which is scheduled for release Friday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Private-sector employment fell in September for the first time since the beginning of the year” in the ADP report, Steven Wood, chief economist at Insight Economics, said in research note. “This does not bode particularly well for private-sector employment in Friday’s Employment Situation report.”
