Person in Focus: Jay Goldstone

WHO: Jay Goldstone is the incoming chairman of the Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board.

TERM: One year starting Oct. 1.

HOMETOWN: St. Louis Park, Minn., outside Minneapolis.

AGE: 61

JOB: Chief operating officer and chief financial officer of San Diego.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in political science, economics and business administration from the University of Minnesota, Masters in Public Administration from Arizona State University, and MA in business administration from Santa Clara University.

WORK EXPERIENCE: In 1976 Goldstone moved to California to be an analyst in the department of health and welfare for San Mateo County, where he worked until 1984. He then worked four years as assistant director of finance for Santa Clara, and six years as finance director in Richmond. He was Richmond’s acting city manager for one year.

Goldstone switched states and worked 10 months as finance manager for Maricopa County in Arizona, before spending 10 years as finance director in Pasadena, Calif. He became San Diego’s CFO in 2006, and is now also COO.

FAMILY: Married for 35 years. Goldstone has two grown children, a daughter in Santa Monica and a son in San Diego, and a six-month-old grandson, Justin.

HOBBIES: Golf, when he has time. “If I get in six to 10 rounds a year, that’s a lot,” he says.
