William 'Bill' Laverty dies at 72

William "Bill" Edward Laverty, 72, died in Vero Beach, Florida, Dec. 18, 2023. He died of natural causes several years after being diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Mr. Laverty worked as a municipal bond underwriter for several Wall Street firms from 1973 through 2021, when he retired from Academy Securities.

As a muni bond underwriter, he worked with dozens of municipalities on financings of everything from power plants to sports complexes.

Some of the many muni deals he worked on were offerings for the original and current Meadowlands stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mr. Laverty graduated summa cum laude from Villanova University in 1973 where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and the lacrosse team. He received his MBA from Boston College in 1976.

"Bill and I graduated in the same year at Villanova," said Rick Kolman, head of the Municipal Group at Academy Securities. "He was always a high-energy individual and carried that energy to his work ethic. It was a privilege to have worked with Bill at Academy. I will miss him."

Mr. Laverty is survived by his children, Max and Hannah, his wife of 43 years, Paula, and his brother, Peter Laverty. He was predeceased by his parents, William J. Laverty in 2000 and Margaret Laverty 2012, and his brother Paul Laverty in 1992.
