Washington Regulator Gets Acting Chief

PHOENIX - Gloria Papiez will become acting director of the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions, the state's primary financial regulator, on Nov. 1.

Gov. Jay Inslee announced the appointment late last week along with the news that Scott Jarvis, the current director of the department, is retiring. The DFI is a statewide financial regulator made up of five divisions, including a division of securities. The DFI takes enforcement actions against violators of the state’s securities laws, and also serves as an educational resource.

Papiez, who is currently deputy director, has worked at DFI since 2000.

In his statement, Inslee praised Jarvis’ leadership and expressed confidence that Papiez will continue to help the agency fulfill its mission.

“I would like to thank Scott for his exceptional leadership,” Inslee said. “He has shown an unrelenting commitment to work with the industry to develop regulations that protect and educate the public while promoting economic vitality. DFI is one of the top agencies in the nation in financial education. I am pleased that Gloria, a dedicated public servant with a tremendous amount of state financial regulation experience and Scott’s deputy for almost 11 years, will continue this crucial work,” Inslee said.

Prior to her work at DFI, Papiez previously worked as assistant director of administration at the Washington State Utilities and Transportation Commission, and assistant director of audit at the Washington State Auditor’s Office. She served as a board member on the Financial Managers Advisory Council, is a member of the Washington Society of Certified Public Accountants, and currently serves on the governor’s Results Washington Goal Council for Efficient, Effective and Accountable Government.
