WASHINGTON – The U.S. government recorded an $80.0 billion deficit in December, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.
Federal receipts totaled $236.9 billion for the month. December was the eighth consecutive month of year-over-year increases in receipts.
December outlays were $316.9 billion, the largest monthly total since June.
Economists expected an $85 billion month budget deficit, according to the median estimate from Thomson Reuters. December was the 27th consecutive monthly budget deficit.
For the fiscal year through December, the government had a $370.8 billion deficit, about 4% lower than the deficit for the same period in fiscal 2010.
