Texas Confidence Index Slips a Bit in December

The Texas employee confidence index fell 1.9 points to 52.6 in December, according to a monthly survey.

The Spherion Employment Report indicates Texas workers still are unsure about the strength of the economy and job availability.

Despite these concerns, the survey said, more workers than not expressed confidence in the future of their current employers and in their personal job security.

“Over the last six months or so, our employee confidence index has fluctuated. While workers are hesitant about the overall health of the economy and job market, it is promising to see that they are maintaining high levels of confidence in their own personal employment situations,” Kim Lockhart, regional vice president for Spherion in Texas, said in a press release.

“With no clear way of determining a timetable for the economic turnaround, it is likely we will see uncertainty among workers continue in the months to come.”

A large group of the workers surveyed — 42% — believe the economy is getting weaker. This represents a 13 percentage-point increase from November.

Sixty-five percent of workers believe there are fewer jobs available, representing a 13 percentage point increase from the previous month.

Nearly three-fourths, or 74%, of workers say they are confident in the future of their current employer. This is a 10 percentage point increase from November.

In December, 80% of workers believed it’s not likely they will lose their jobs, up from 72% the previous month.
