Scranton, Pa., zoning officer and 2013 Democratic mayoral candidate Joseph Cardamone died. He was 62.
Newly elected Mayor Bill Courtright hired Mr. Cardamone to the city's zoning officer position shortly after succeeding fellow Democrat Chris Doherty, a 12-year mayor who did not seek re-election.
Mr. Cardamone died unexpectedly on March 4 after a medical procedure, city Licensing, Inspections and Permits Director Patrick Hinton told Scranton's Times-Tribune newspaper. Mr. Cardamone was Scranton's director of community development from 1990-93.
Mr. Cardamone earned a bachelor's degree in government administration from the University of Scranton in 1980. He served as borough manager of Olyphant in 1994, an administrator in Coolbaugh Township in 1995 and an administrator in Scott Township during the 1990s, according to the newspaper.
