The University of Michigan's preliminary September consumer sentiment index reading was 95.3, compared to the final August 96.8 and the preliminary August 97.6, according to market sources.

The expectations index was 83.4, compared to the final August 87.7 and the preliminary August 89.0.
The current conditions index was 113.9, compared to the final August 110.9 and the preliminary August 111.0.
Economists polled by IFR Markets had predicted a 95.2 reading for the main index.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.5% in August, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.7%, compared to 2.6% in August.
