MSRB to Hold Briefing on Munis May 8

The Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board will hold an on-the-record briefing about municipal securities at a National Press Club luncheon on May 8 to attempt to educate a wider audience of journalists about the municipal market.

The noon briefing "will provide an introduction to the important role the municipal securities market plays in financing public projects nationwide and will include an opportunity to learn how to uncover the details of these bond deals," the MSRB said in a release Friday.

MSRB communications director Jennifer Galloway said the event will hopefully help turn a wider range of journalists on to covering the muni market. Topics discussed will be how municipal bonds are issued and used, how they are regulated, and some current topics in the industry.

"The goal is just to educate," Galloway said. "It's really going to be very basic.

The MSRB is currently making a push to improve its online database resource EMMA, which includes postings of official statements as well as various disclosures required by MSRB rules. MSRB executive director Lynnette Kelly has said the EMMA system has been and likely will continue to be an important resource for investigative journalists.
