Jobless claims rise, but still below expectations

Initial jobless claims rose to 233,000 in the week ended Jan. 20, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The claims figure for the week ended Jan. 13 was revised to 216,000 from the originally reported 220,000. Continuing jobless claims were 1.937 million in the week ended Jan. 13, down from 1.965 million the week before.

IFR Markets expected 240,000 initial claims and 1.928 million continuing claims.

The four-week average of initial claims was down 3,500 in the week ended Jan. 20 to 240,000.
