Jobless claims exceed expectations

Initial jobless claims rose to 230,000 in the week ended Feb. 10, the Labor Department said Thursday.

The claims figure for the week ended Feb. 1 was revised to 223,000 from the originally reported 221,000. Continuing jobless claims were 1.942 million in the week ended Feb. 3, up from 1.927 million the week before.

IFR Markets expected 227,000 initial claims and 1.930 continuing claims.

The four-week average of initial claims was up 3,500 in the week ended Feb. 10 to 228,500.
