Fast-Rail Funding on Track

The Illinois Department of Transportation late last month signed an agreement with Amtrak and the Union Pacific Railroad that paves the way for using $1.1 billion in federal funds for necessary improvements to high-speed passenger rail service between Chicago and St. Louis.

The agreement was needed in order for federal grants announced last year to be awarded. The state DOT will administer the funds while Amtrak will operate the trains on Union Pacific tracks.

“It’s a wonderful day for Illinoisans as we celebrate a milestone achievement toward becoming the first state in the nation to bring high-speed rail to fruition,” Gov. Pat Quinn said in a statement.
