Former Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias has joined BNY Mellon’s wealth management business in the newly created role of senior adviser for strategic relationships.

Giannoulias will be charged with building the group’s government client base nationally.

From 2007 to 2011 he served as state treasurer, an office that manages a $14 billion investment portfolio.

Giannoulias, a Democrat, ran for President Barack Obama’s Senate seat in 2010 but lost to Republican Mark Kirk.
