Battered by Bad Weather, Chain Store Sales Sink 1%

Inclement weather continued to damp chain store sales, which fell 1.0% in the week ended Jan. 29, according to the ICSC-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Snapshot released on Tuesday.

Year-over-year sales were up 1.6%.

“Retailers have experienced a battery of severe storms throughout the month that will tend to accentuate the weather-induced sales weakness, given January is traditionally a low-volume month for sales,” said Michael Niemira, ICSC vice president of research and chief economist.
