The University of Michigan's preliminary December consumer sentiment index reading was 91.8, compared to the final November 93.1, and the preliminary November 93.1, according to market sources.
The expectations index was 82.0, compared to the final November 82.9, and the preliminary November 85.6.
The current conditions index was 107.0, compared to the final November 104.3, and the preliminary November 104.8.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 92.0 reading for the main index, 81.0 for expectations and 103.5 for current conditions.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.6% in November, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.6%, compared to 2.7% in November.
