A new poll shows that a statewide ballot initiative to limit highway tolls in Washington has lost traction with voters, according to the Seattle Times.
The Elway Research poll released Monday shows that support for anti-tax crusader Tim Eyman’s tolling measure has dropped 13 points since last month, the newspaper said.
The measure, Initiative 1125, would prohibit the state from diverting gas taxes and toll revenue to the general fund and would limit the use of tolls to the transportation projects for which they pay.
The measure easily qualified for the ballot, which required 241,153 valid signatures, according to the secretary of state.
The initiative appears at least partly aimed at stopping the potential collection of tolls on Interstate 90 to help pay for the construction of a new 520 floating bridge, where tolls are soon to be in place on the current span to help pay for the project.
The state has only studied the possibility of tolling.
