Wayne County Budget Spat

Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano is pushing the county Board of Commissioners to enact a pair of budget proposals that Ficano says will help keep expenses in line.

One ordinance would put the county on a two-year budget cycle. The other would give the county’s chief financial officer the authority to make budget cuts without commissioners’ input.

A report in Crain’s Detroit Business quoted the board chairman calling the proposed changes a “power grab.”

“By delegating its authority to the CEO, the commission would become a mere spectator to the budget process,” board chairman Edward Boike Jr. was quoted as saying in a letter to the board.
