Vote Sought for Penny Tax

Local governments in and around Atlanta Tuesday will ask voters to renew a one-cent sales tax for school construction. The tax can be used to secure bonds.

At least one county plans to use tax revenues to pay existing debt service and rely less on property taxes, according to published reports.

The special-purpose, local-option sales tax is up for renewal in Atlanta and Decatur, as well as Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cherokee, Douglas and Henry counties. Collectively, the tax is expected to raise more than $3 billion over five years for local school district projects.
