NEW YORK - The University of Michigan's final January consumer sentiment index reading was 74.4, compared to the preliminary January 72.8, the final December 72.5, and the final November 67.4, according to market sources.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 73.0 reading for the index.
The expectations index was 70.1, compared to 67.5 earlier this month, 68.9 last month, and 66.5 in November.
The current conditions index was 81.1, compared to 81.0 at mid-month, 78.0 last month, and 68.8 in November.
Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 78.4 reading for the current conditions index and 69.0 for the expectations index.
The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.9,, compared to 2.8% earlier in the month, 2.7% last month, and 3.0% in November, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.8% earlier in the month, 2.5% last month, and 2.7%in November.
The University of Michigan index is not released to the press, but only to paying subscribers.
