Treasurer Vows to Rebuild

Treasurer Ted Wheeler took the oath of office Monday, pledging to protect Oregon’s long-term health.

Wheeler said during his acceptance speech that he will use the tools of the state Treasury to help rebuild Oregon’s economy and will be an independent voice on financial policy decisions.

He was elected to a full term in November following his appointment in March after the death of predecessor Ben Westlund.

He said he will build on last year’s initiatives, including making financial information more transparent and helping to educate consumers about financial pitfalls.

Wheeler also said he will push to expand Oregon’s rainy-day fund.

Oregon’s treasurer oversees public investments and manages the tax-advantaged Oregon 529 College Savings Network.

Wheeler also said in a statement that Darren Bond will continue as the deputy treasurer, a position he has held since 2009.
