WASHINGTON - Retail sales increased 0.6% in September, their third consecutive monthly gain, the Commerce Department reported this morning.
Excluding auto sales, retail sales increased 0.4%, also the third straight monthly increase for the category. Excluding auto, gasoline and building material, retail sales increased 0.4% for the month.
Economists expected September retail sales would increase 0.4% and sales excluding auto also would increase 0.4%, according to the median estimate from Thomson Reuters.
Retail sales for August were upwardly revised to a 0.7% increase from the 0.4% gain reported last month. August retail sales excluding autos were revised to a 1.0% increase from the originally reported 0.6% rise.
