SEC Chairman Addresses Reopening of Securities Markets

WASHINGTON — Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Mary Schapiro today issued a statement saying she is pleased that the nation's securities markets were able to open Wednesday despite the devastation left by Hurricane Sandy.

"Since the weekend, the staff of the SEC and I have been in constant communication with the exchanges, market participants, and other regulators assessing the situation and coordinating with the relevant parties," Schapiro said.  "We will continue to monitor developments over the coming days."

The markets were up and running Wednesday after having been shut down for part of the day Monday and all day Tuesday.
