Rhode Island Getting Bridge Funds

Rhode Island will receive more than $3.3 million in federal funds to help replace the Pawtucket River Bridge on Interstate 95 in Pawtucket, the state’s congressional delegation announced.

Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse and U.S. Rep. David Cicilline made the announcement. Reed is a member of the Appropriations Committee.

The bridge, built in 1958 to carry 60,000 vehicles daily, now carries 162,000 vehicles over Taft Street and the Pawtucket River.

Federal Highway Administration funds are covering 80% of the $81 million project and Rhode Island will pay the remainder.

In April, the state’s Department of Transportation completed the first construction span.
