The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority board of directors named Javier Quintana Mendez as its new executive director.
Quintana Mendez will assume the role on Aug. 3, the authority said in a press release Tuesday.
Quintana Mendez has been serving as the vice-chair of the PREPA Board of Directors for almost two years and has an extensive energy background, the authority said.
PREPA, which has been operating under a forbearance agreement with its creditors since August, has about $8.3 billion in bond debt and $700 million in bank debt, according to PREPA chief restructuring officer Lisa Donahue.
The former executive director, Juan Alicea Flores, left PREPA's employment on June 23.
