At first glance, Army paratrooper and investment banker may seem like very different careers. For Patrick Doherty, however, they share a common purpose: serving the country and the communities that make it strong.
Since childhood, Pat dreamed of becoming an Army paratrooper. At 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and spent six years as an airborne infantryman, team leader and sergeant. His service included multiple combat patrols in Iraq and he earned numerous medals.
Although his military career had come to an end, Pat wasn't finished "serving."
He earned a bachelor's degree in finance and business administration and joined PFM Financial Advisors as an analyst, helping local governments and school districts finance projects that strengthen their communities. He then earned his MBA.
When the opportunity arose to join veteran-owned Bancroft Capital through the firm's Veteran Training Program, Pat didn't hesitate.
"It's a great opportunity for veterans who want to build a career in finance," he says. "I also get to work with some of the smartest people I've ever known."
Alongside seasoned public finance professionals who have mentored him, Pat is helping mentor the next generation of military veterans entering the financial industry. He's also working toward his master's degree in finance.
Pat is energized by the creativity that public finance demands. He enjoys developing financing strategies, crafting presentations and pitching ideas that help issuers achieve their goals. As Bancroft continues to expand its public finance platform, he's proud to play a role in demonstrating the firm's ability to compete for increasingly complex and high-profile transactions.
For Pat, the connection between his military and civilian careers has always been clear.
"It's rewarding to know the work I do benefits communities across the country and helps build infrastructure that will serve people for generations to come," he says.
