Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP has hired Douglas Benson as the law firm's chief operating officer. He comes over from Clifford Chance Rogers & Wells LLP, where he has been COO of the Americas region for the past three years.

Benson, who officially starts at Orrick on Sept. 23, noted that he was hired at Clifford Chance in July 1999, when two law firms, Clifford Chance and Rogers & Wells, announced plans to merge. He was hired to assist with the transition. "Now it's largely complete," he said.

Benson said that he was attracted to Orrick Herrington because of its leadership and clients, and because he believes it is poised to become a real leader in the industry.

Ralph Baxter Jr., chairman and chief executive officer, said the firm is pleased to have Benson on board. "It's a great development for Orrick," Baxter said, calling Benson one of the best known and most highly respected law firm leaders in the country.

At Clifford Chance, Benson reported to Jim Benedict, regional managing partner, and Philip Palmer, COO, who is based in London.
