New York State is releasing $75 million to accelerate resurfacing projects on roads that suffered widespread damage from a harsh winter season. Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on June 22 that the funds will speed up repairs on 428 lane miles of state highways. The $75 million is in addition to more than $437 million in capital construction funds that were dedicated to paving an estimated 2,311 miles of state roads in the 2016 fiscal budget.

"It's important to keep the state's highways in top shape, and after another harsh winter, we're expediting critical repair projects to ensure the roads are safer for New Yorkers," said Cuomo in a statement. "This funding will speed up much-needed resurfacing and rebuilding efforts, which is good for motorists across the state."

State officials said whenever practical, pavement that is removed in the resurfacing projects will be recycled and reused at the same location or in future construction. Traffic signal vehicle detectors will also be replaced with new pavement markings installed as needed.

"This is much-needed funding and will be a huge boost to roads all across the state and make the repairs necessitated by the bitter winter months," said U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D, N.Y., in a statement. "By improving the condition of New York's roads, we will improve safety for business, residents and travelers and lay the foundation needed for strong economic growth."
