Denise Canada has been hired as the North Carolina treasurer's state and local government finance director.

State Treasurer Brad Briner announced the appointment of Canada Tuesday.

"Denise's unique background and deep understanding of issues facing both state and local governments will be invaluable as we serve the more than 1,100 units of local government in North Carolina," Briner said. "Denise is the right person to lead this division and I am excited for her to join the team."

Canada most recently was the director of research and fiscal policy at the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.

Prior to that she was a principal fiscal analyst for the North Carolina General Assembly's fiscal research division, focusing on local government tax policy.

Canada has also served as a Wake County budget and management analyst, and as a fiscal analyst for the Baltimore County, Maryland, auditor's office.

Canada replaces Jeff Poley, who served as interim director of state and local government finance.

North Carolina has a Local Government Commission that oversees and votes on proposed municipal bond sales.

The LGC consists of the state treasurer, secretary of state, state revenue secretary, three members of the public, current or former county government officials and a current city council member. The division provides staff support to the commission.
