New Fiscal Wiz Tapped

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie has appointed Luis Salaveria as deputy director of the Department of Budget and Finance.

Salaveria, who started work Sept. 1, replaces Dean Hirata, who resigned on July 30.

“There are many challenges facing the state and I look forward to the opportunity to make a contribution,” Salaveria said.

Salaveria has 20 years of experience in financial and accounting management, including several positions in state government. He served as chief budget analyst for Hawaii’s State Department of Defense from 1997 to 2001.

He also served as committee clerk for the state Senate Committee on Transportation, Military and Intergovernmental Affairs from 1996 to 1997, and as budget supervisor from 1995 to 1996 and budget analyst from 1993 to 1994 for the state Senate Committee on Ways and Means.

Salaveria, who has been the finance manager for Kaiser Permanente Hawaii for the past 10 years, holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa.
