The Amite County Board of Education has scheduled a referendum for Sept. 25 to ask voters to approve nearly $14 million of general obligation bonds.
The law requires 60% of those voting to approve the referendum in order for the school bond to pass. School officials have said the bond proceeds would be used to build a new high school gym and a new physical education building at one of the county’s two elementary schools.
Amite, a small county in southwestern Mississippi, has a population of approximately 14,000 and four public schools.
