Looking for Pain-Free Cuts

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley signed an executive order Tuesday creating the Alabama Commission on Improving State Government, which would explore ways to reduce government spending with minimal or no reduction in state services.

The commission is expected to look at the results of similar entities in other states and to get input from business leaders.

“We are in challenging economic times and state government must do what every Alabama family is doing right now and that is find ways to cut back on spending,” Bentley said. “The Alabama Commission on Improving State Government will take an in-depth look at the current cost structure of every state agency and look for new and effective ways to cut costs without cutting essential services.”

The commission is expected to file a preliminary report June 1.

Bentley also ordered state agencies, departments, and commissions to conduct a “comprehensive and systematic evaluation” of staff expenses.
