L.I. Alliance Nets Savings

Long Island County Executives Steve Bellone and Edward Mangano announced last week that Suffolk and Nassau counties will together save an estimated $1 million as a result of a cooperative bid for the purchase of wastewater treatment and pool chemicals.

The bid is the second in a series of cooperative purchases under the Long Island Intergovernmental Purchasing Council.

“Cooperation among the various governmental entities is key to reining in spending and holding the line on taxes,” Mangano said. “I applaud those agencies that joined us on this latest cost-saving initiative.”

Oyster Bay, Sands Point, Patchogue and five Nassau water districts are the other LIPC members that participated in the bulk bid. The town of Oyster Bay anticipates a saving of approximately $25,000.

The bid included sodium hypochlorite, sodium hydroxide, and calcium hypochlorite.

Nassau County alone uses approximately four million gallons of sodium hypochlorite at its two sewage treatment plants and about 30,000 gallons a year at various county pools for a total cost of more than $10 million between 2009 and 2011.
