Kimberly Witherspoon joined Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd, P.A., in 2010 as a member of the firm’s public finance practice group.

She serves as bond counsel for colleges and universities, foundations, healthcare institutions, senior living communities, charter schools and various nonprofit organizations.

She also assists healthcare and educational institutions in mergers, acquisitions, expansions and affiliations with a concentration in providing legal strategies for complex taxable and tax-exempt financings.

Additionally, Kimberly advises cities, counties and special-purpose districts as they structure financings for their capital and operational needs through the issuance of various types of municipal bonds and other obligations.

“I view each bond transaction as an opportunity to build a stronger community — through high-quality health care, educational and senior living facilities," she said. "Each bond issue is a key building block in the success of our clients’ efforts to enhance the quality of life in South Carolina.”

Kimberly had a key role in the largest healthcare transaction in South Carolina, which created the biggest healthcare delivery system in that state.

"She was a key participant in preparing complex documentation for that transaction. It's only one example of a transaction in which she has provided leadership," said Kathleen McKinney, public finance attorney at Haynsworth.

Kimberly is an active member of the South Carolina Upstate community. She is president-elect of the Junior League of Greenville, the first African-American woman in this role.

She is a past board member of several organizations, including United Way of Greenville County, Pendleton Place, Greenville Chautauqua and Furman University Alumni Council. She is a Liberty Fellow through the Aspen Global Leadership Network and a graduate of the Riley Institute at Furman’s Diversity Leaders Initiative and Leadership Greenville.

Kimberly received a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and a B.A. from Furman University.

Outside of work, she enjoys family gatherings centered around delicious Southern dishes, learning how to play golf and hosting an annual Kentucky Derby party for friends.
