BRADENTON, Fla. — Commissioners in Jefferson County, Ala., Thursday once again delayed a decision on settling the county $3.14 sewer debt default or filing for bankruptcy.
After a four-and-a-half hour closed-door session, Commission President David Carrington announced that the commissioners are preparing a counteroffer to the creditors’ proposal made last week to accept $2.1 billion.
The commission will meet again Aug. 12, Carrington said, indicating that a final decision may be made then.
“Please understand that negotiations are extremely fragile and confidential,” he said, adding that commissioners are not at liberty to discuss details.
