WASHINGTON — U.S. import prices jumped 1.4% in January, as both fuel and nonfuel prices rose, the Labor Department reported today.
Economists expected January import prices to rise 0.8%, according to the median estimate from Thomson Reuters. Import prices increased 11.5% from January 2009.
The January jump came as December import prices rose a revised 0.2%, previously reported as flat.
Nonpetroleum imports rose 0.6% in January, following an unrevised 0.5% rise in December.
