WASHINGTON — Business inventories rose 0.6% in August, while sales crept up 0.1%, the Commerce Department reported Friday.

Economists expected business inventories to increase 0.5% for August.

Retail inventories grew 1.0% and retail inventories excluding motor vehicles were up 0.2%.

In July, inventories rose 1.1%, while sales increased 0.8%
