FBI Raids State Senator's Offices

The Federal Bureau of Investigation raided the offices of Sen. Ron Calderon, D-Montebello, Tuesday, according to published reports.

The FBI has not given a reason for the raid, although it has ties to an investigation out of Los Angeles, the Sacramento Bee newspaper reported.

The paper quoted Calderon’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, as saying prosecutors have no case.

Calderon comes from a family with a long history of service in Los Angeles and state politics.

He is head of the Senate Insurance Committee and the Senate Select Committee on California’s Film and Television Industries.

The Bee said the FBI raid is the first in the Capitol since the late 1980s, which was tied to a scandal termed “shrimpscam” involving the bureau setting up a phony shrimp company pushing a bill to ensnare corrupt lawmakers.

It led to more than a dozen convictions for corruption.
