District OKs State Takeover

The East St. Louis School District 189 board last week voted to support a state takeover of the fiscally and academically ailing system, and canceled its contract with superintendent Theresa Saunders.

The board named chief financial officer Leroy Triefenbach as interim superintendent.

The Illinois Board of Education will take control of the district’s finances. A liaison between the district and state boards will provide temporary oversight until a long-term appointee is named.

The state board voted last month to take control of the district. The agreement runs through June 30, 2014, and can be renewed annually up to three years.
