December’s $80B Deficit Comes In on the Low Side

WASHINGTON — The U.S. recorded a smaller-than-expected December deficit of $80 billion, the Treasury Department reported Wednesday.

Economists expected an $85 billion budget deficit. Federal receipts totaled $236.9 billion in December, making it the eighth consecutive month of year-over-year increases. December outlays were $316.9 billion — the largest monthly total since June.
