Consumer Sentiment Index Inches Higher

The University of Michigan’s final December consumer sentiment index reading was 72.8 compared to the final December 72.5, the preliminary December 73.4, and the final November 67.4, according to market sources.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 73.8 reading for the index.

The expectations index was 67.5, compared to 68.9 last month, 69.7 earlier in December, and 66.5 in November.

The current conditions index was 81.0, compared to 78.0 last month, 79.1 earlier in December, and 68.8 in November.

Economists polled by Thomson Reuters had predicted a 78.5 reading for the current conditions index and 70.3 for the expectations index.

The five-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 27.% last month, 2.6% earlier in the month, and 3.0% in November, while the one-year inflation expectation index was 2.8%, compared to 2.5% last month 2.1% earlier in the month, 2.7%, and in November.
