Bond counsel rankings shuffle in Q1

Spots number one, seven and nine were the only firms that stayed put in the top municpal bond counsel rankings and there were three newcomers to the top 10.

The top bond counsels combined for a total of $103.707 billion in 2,674 transactions in the first quarter of 2021, up from the $87.762 billion in 2,108 deals in the first quarter of 2020.

Orrick on top

Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP led all bond counsels yet again and even extended the lead from this time last year, although its market share dipped overall. The firm worked on $13.757 billion in 122 deals for a market share of 13.3%, compared to $12.476 billion in 93 issues and 14.2% share of the market in 2020.

Norton Rose rises up to second

Norton Rose Fulbright moved up two spots from where they were at this point last year. The firm accounted for $6.657 billion, or 6.4% market share, up from $4.697 billion and 5.4% market share in 2020.

Hawkins flies up three spots

Hawkins Delafield & Wood LLP moved up to third place after nearly doubling its par amount from a year ago.

The firm totaled $5.069 billion and a market share of 4.9%, both bested Q1 2020 numbers of $2.941 billion and 3.4%.

Hawkins also finished second in the underwriters counsel rankings with $3.839 billion.

Kutak Rock rises to fourth

Kutak Rock LLP moved up one spot from last year, while the firm's market share remained at 4.1%.

The firm had a par amount of $4.292 billion in 120 deals in Q1 2021 compared to $3.635 billion in 88 transactions in Q1 of 2020.

Stradling springs up into the top 5

Stradling Yocca Carlson & Rauth made the biggest jump year-over-year, after coming in 21st place this time last year.

For the first three months of 2021, the firm amassed $3.540 billion and 3.4% market share, compared to $933 million and 1.1%.

Best of the rest

Rounding out the top 10 are: Nixon Peabody LLP moved up from eighth to sixth with $3.339 billion; Gilmore & Bell PC stayed in seventh with $3.179 billion; Bryant Rabbino LLP moved up four spots from 12th with $3.046 billion; Ballard Spahr LLP was steady in ninth place with $2.956 billion; and Butler Snow LLP makes the second biggest jump, from 24th to 10th, with $2.690 billion.
