Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Pass $320 Million for Water Port

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey passed a resolution authorizing $320 million for the improvement of its Greenville Yard water port in Jersey City, N.J.

Currently containers brought to the port on ships can only be taken away by truck. The improvement will allow the containers to be removed by rail as well. It will also allow containers to be delivered to the port by rail.

Another use for the money will be to improve a cross-New York Harbor carfloat system of rail-car barges between Jersey City and Brooklyn, N.Y.

Finally, a small portion of the money will be used for the design and construction of offsite rail improvements in northern New Jersey to support the Greenville Yards changes.

The changes should reduce cargo transportation costs and time, reduce pollution in the New York City area, and reduce truck traffic on area roads, according to the port authority.

The authority board voted for the improvements on Wednesday.
