Film Industry Nets Nassau County $533M

The film and television industry generated more than a half billion in economic activity for Long Island's Nassau County in 2013 and 2014, according to a new report.

The independent analysis conducted by Camoin Associates showed that the suburban county located just outside New York City received $533.6 million in economic benefit and more than $1.64 million in sales and hotel taxes during the two-year period. The industry also employed 1,773 annual jobs through the production of more than 535 films during 2,109 days.

"Nassau County continues to be the Hollywood East of the motion picture and television industry as productions, both large and small have been attracted to our unique facilities," said Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano in a statement.

The Camoin Associates economic study, which was commissioned by the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency, focused its review largely on three filmmaking facilities that included Gold Coast Studios in Bethpage, Grumman Studios in Bethpage and the Sands Point Preserve in Port Washington. The three studios are qualified New York State production facilities that entitle film producers to a 30% tax credit through the Empire State Film Production Tax Credit program.

Since becoming county executive in 2010, Mangano has hosted annual tours of Nassau's film studios to attract producers, directors and film writers to the area. Some of the movies and television shows filmed in Nassau the last two years include NBC's live performance of "Peter Pan," "The Good Wife," "The Amazing Spiderman 2," "Royal Pains," "The Americans," "Boardwalk Empire," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "Annie."

A previous study from Camoin Associates released in December 2013 estimated that Nassau County received more than $140 million in economic activity from the film industry in 2012 with 1,945 people employed. Nassau County is rated A2 by Moody's Investors Service.
