New Sen. Ed Markey Assigned to Commerce Committee

WASHINGTON — The newest U.S. Senator, Ed Markey, has been assigned to the Commerce, Science and Transportation committee, which splits jurisdiction over transportation issues with the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Markey, D-Mass., was sworn in Tuesday after he won a special election to fill the seat vacated by John Kerry when he became Secretary of State.

Before becoming a Senator, he spent more than three decades in the U.S. House of Representatives. He had served as ranking minority member on the House Committee on Natural Resources.

"I'm thrilled to welcome Sen. Markey to the Commerce Committee. He brings thirty-seven years of experience in the House, where he became renowned for his tough but fair approach to consumer protection issues," Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W. Va., said in a statement.

In addition to joining the Commerce committee, Markey also was assigned to the Small Business and Entrepreneurship and Foreign Relations committees.
