Intel Project Boosts Revs

Chandler, Ariz.’s sales tax revenues recorded a 14.8% increase in the first four months of fiscal 2012, the most it has recorded since the same period of fiscal 2007.

The Phoenix suburb has posted 20 consecutive months with increasing revenues.

Budget manager Greg Westrum said last week that sales tax revenue totaled $32 million from July 1 through Oct. 31.

City officials said much of the additional revenue is being generated by construction of a $5 billion semiconductor factory being built in Chandler by Intel Corp. The project is to be completed in 2013.

Sales tax collections from construction contracting were up 75.5% from the first four months of 2011, totaling $3.6 million in the same period of fiscal 2012, Westrum said in the city’s monthly financial report.

Retail sales tax collections in the first quarter totaled $13.4 million.

Sales tax revenue through Dec. 31 totaled $46 million, Westrum said, up from $41 million in the same period of fiscal 2011.
