Budget Battle Redux Looms

The Kentucky Legislature could be headed for another year struggling to adopt a budget before adjournment.

As lawmakers began their final three weeks of the regular session Monday, the Democrat-controlled House and the Republican-controlled Senate still had not agreed on how to pay for Medicaid.

One of the key differences holding up an agreement on the budget is a proposal calling for additional cuts in education.

The session is scheduled to end March 22. A total impasse could require calling a special session, which is what the state did last year to adopt the budget.
