Bryant Gets the Nod

Mississippi Lieut. Gov. Phil Bryant last week bested four candidates vying for the Republican nomination for governor this fall.

Bryant has served four years as second in command under Gov. Haley Barbour, who will be term limited out of office. Bryant also served more than a decade as state auditor.

Two Democrats will run off for that party’s gubernatorial nomination on Aug. 23. The contest will be between Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and Clarksdale attorney Bill Luckett.

State Treasurer Tate Reeves won the Republican primary for lieutenant governor last week.

No Democrat is in that race, though the Reform Party has said it will have a candidate on the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

Reeves has served as treasurer for two terms.
