Wichita School Issue Grows

Trustees of Sedgwick County Unified School District 259 have increased the size of a proposed general obligation bond issue to $370 million from $350 million after a pro-bond citizens committee asked for revisions to the project list.

The district, which serves the city of Wichita, has a current enrollment of almost 49,000 students.

The school board last week set the election on the bond package for Nov. 4.

In July, the Citizens Alliance for Responsible Education asked the school board to remove $20 million from a proposed list of $61 million of athletic improvement projects and add $17 million in technical education. The trustees added the technical education projects but raised the total package by $20 million to include all the athletic improvements and to cover expected increases in construction costs.

The proposal is the district’s largest bond request. District voters approved a $284.5 million GO package in April 2000.

The district’s GOs have underlying ratings of Aa3 from Moody’s Investors Service and AA from Standard & Poor’s.
