U.S. Government Ran $52.5 Billion Deficit in May

The federal government ran a $52.5 billion deficit in May, the Treasury Department reported Friday.

The May deficit followed a $106.5 billion budget surplus in April.

The May deficit was smaller than the median $60.0 billion deficit predicted by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.

Outlays in May totaled $277.111 billion. Receipts totaled $224.603 billion.

In May 2015, the government ran an $84.1 billion deficit.

For the fiscal year to date, the government has a $407.1 billion deficit, compared to a $366.8 billion deficit for the similar period on fiscal 2015.
